
Within the framework of the
Baku-Tbilisi-Kars new railway line project, legal and technical procedures for
the establishment of a joint venture have been completed.
Based on an international agreement signed
between the two countries, a joint venture, BTKI Railways LLC, was established
by subsidiaries of Azerbaijan Railways JSC and Marabda-Kartsakhi Railway LLC,
which will manage the infrastructure of the Marabda-Kartsakhi railway section.
The length of the Georgian section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars new railway line is 180 km, including 27 km of European standard track. The Akhalkalaki International Railway Station is noteworthy, with an area of 102 hectares and includes a station building designed by German architect Jürgen Meyer and a freight area of international standards, designed for all types of cargo. The project's throughput capacity is 5 million tons of cargo per year.
