Armenia joins Ashgabat Agreement on Transport Corridor

The Government of Armenia has approved the Agreement on the Accession of the Republic of Armenia to the International Transit Corridor between Iran, Oman, Qatar, Turkmenistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan (hereinafter referred to as the Ashgabat Agreement).

The justification states that accession to the Ashgabat Agreement will contribute to the creation of reliable conditions for the transportation and transit of cargo and passengers on the territory of the member states, the promotion of multimodal transportation, the optimization of transport costs, the strengthening of the transit role of the republic, the improvement of transport safety and the creation of equal conditions for the transport organizations of the member states.

Accession to the Ashgabat Agreement will ensure access to international markets through the transport corridor, harmonization of transit documents required for international transportation, simplification of customs procedures, and non-discriminatory use of the transport infrastructure of the member states.

The Agreement will make it possible to regulate the process of implementing logistics shipments by various means of transport between the countries-parties to the Agreement, as well as contribute to the promotion of mutually beneficial economic and business ties between the countries, the expansion of cooperation, and the strengthening of the transit role of the Republic of Armenia.

The Agreement is consistent with the main principles of the “Crossroads of Peace” project and will contribute to the deepening of transport ties and economic cooperation in the region.
