Black Sea Power Cable Could Generate EU 6 Billion Annually

2026-01-27

Georgia could earn up to €6 billion a year from electricity exports to Europe if the planned Black Sea submarine power cable to Romania is completed, says Giorgi Margebadze of the Small and Medium Hydropower Plants Association.

With Georgia’s renewable potential at 50 billion kWh per year, large-scale exports could become a long-term reality. However, outdated transmission infrastructure remains the biggest obstacle, causing delays in many projects.

In 2025, Georgia’s electricity generation dropped to 13.8 billion kWh, while consumption rose to 14.8 billion kWh, highlighting the urgent need for grid upgrades.
