CASCA+ Transportation Corridor Challenges

The management of Uzbekistan Railways has initiated the creation of a consortium for the coordination of cargo transportation along the CASCA+ transport corridor. At the meeting held on May 28-29 in Tashkent, the proposal of the Uzbek side was supported by representatives of the railway administration and export companies from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.

The delegation of Uzbekistan also proposed to the participating parties the transportation of perishable goods (fruits and vegetables) along the CASCA+ corridor in refrigerated containers and accordingly to create an online monitoring system for the location of wagons and containers.

The CASCA+ multimodal transport project is an initiative of the state railways of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey called - Central Asia, South Caucasus and Anatolia. The "+" sign in the name symbolizes the readiness to accept new participants.

In December 2022, the first container train with copper concentrate passed on the CASCA+ route (from Uzbekistan to Bulgaria). The train consisted of 46 wagons and 91 units of 20-foot containers. The transit distance is more than 4000 km. The main task is that such container trains regularly run on this route. The goal of the operators is to increase the volume of container transportation to 30 thousand containers per year.

In November of last year, the leaders of the railway administrations of the CASCA+ member countries of the multimodal transit route signed an agreement to strengthen international cooperation between logistics structures, the purpose of which is to activate the CASCA+ transport corridor and exchange experience between the participating countries in order to realize the transport potential of road, sea, rail and air transport.
