The Liner Shipping Connectivity Index
developed by the UN is an important parameter in the maritime sector, which
indicates the positioning of a country's maritime infrastructure in global
maritime transportation networks, integrating it with world ports. The
"Transport Corridor Research Center" writes about this.
According to the TCRC, the Port
Infrastructure Connectivity Index includes a set of sub-criteria that determine
the intensity of connectivity of Georgian ports with other ports of the world
by container ships, the regularity of lines.
As of September 2025, according to the
average indicator of the components of the Liner Shipping Connectivity Index,
Georgia is in 114th position among 179 countries.
For Georgia, which is located in a key
location of the Middle Corridor, it is important to increase connectivity
(intensity) with the countries of the Black Sea basin.
Georgia has all the attributes
characteristic of a maritime country, including: a maritime flag, a state
maritime regulatory body, state control of the flag has been implemented, it
has ports, a rescue coordination center, a hydrographic service, training
centers for seafarers, the state is a party to the Black Sea Memorandum of Port
State Control, and has signed memorandums with more than 70 states in terms of
seafarer employment.
Positioning at 114th place in the world
according to the connectivity index cannot be considered a satisfactory result
and does not reflect the country's capabilities for maritime ambitions.
The question arises – will the connectivity
index of Georgia’s port infrastructure become a limiting factor for the
competitiveness of the Middle Corridor in the near future? - writes the
“Transport Corridor Research Center”.
As for the other countries of the Black Sea
basin and the region, according to the relevant updated data, they are in the
following places:
Turkey – 17th, Russia – 32nd, Lithuania –
60th, Iran – 85th, Romania – 89th, Latvia – 93rd, Georgia – 114th, Bulgaria –
124th, Ukraine – 144th (61st before the war).
According to the Liner Shipping Connectivity Index – LSCI index, China is in the lead, South Korea is in second place, Singapore is in third, the United States is in fourth, and Malaysia is in fifth.
