''Golden Fleece'' and ''Green Transport''

2026-06-27

Jaba Tarimanashvili, Director of "Trans Logistics", states that Anaklia is not just an alternative to the Port of Poti. It opens up completely new opportunities for Georgia.

“You know that we have two main ports that handle dry cargo – these are the Batumi Port and the Poti Port. These ports are working very well, they are doing their best, but, as they say, there is no power above themselves. The Poti Port can handle about 8 million tons and has almost fully utilized this capacity. The Batumi Port can handle about 2 million tons of dry cargo and this is also fully utilized, which actually limits their ability to handle additional large-volume cargo.

There is already a demand for additional infrastructure here, and we are actively talking about the Anaklia Port, which is vital for Georgia and, in fact, we have even called the Anaklia Port the “modern Golden Fleece”, because Anaklia is not, like the Batumi Port and the Poti Port, in the city center. The space is not as limited as in these existing ports. Accordingly, we have a very wide area for development here and to attract not only container cargo, but also we can attract dry bulk cargo, general cargo, accumulate up to 60,000 tons of cargo for “Panamax” type ships, and thus we will create a completely new picture for Georgia and completely new opportunities that international partners will use”, - says Jaba Tarimanashvili.

Minister of Economy Mariam Kvrivishvili spoke about the “Anaklia Port” project at a meeting with representatives of the transport and logistics sector and members of the Georgian Business Association. Although the government has not yet selected an investor for the port, the minister promised business that the country’s main port will receive its first ship by 2029.

In addition to the Anaklia Port, Jaba Tarimanashvili talks about the railway as a “green transport” Competitiveness.

“Within the framework of the Paris Climate Agreement, there is “NetZero 2050”, according to which carbon emissions, the effect of greenhouse gases, should be limited as much as possible, which somewhat increases the cost of maritime transportation. Accordingly, this creates additional demand for rail transportation in a 25-year perspective.

If the railways are electrified, if these lines are supplied with renewable energy or nuclear energy, then rail transportation will be considered completely “green” transportation, which will additionally accumulate special carbon credits for those carriers who use rail transportation. Accordingly, these are new opportunities for us. "This, in addition to geopolitics, is an opportunity created by decarbonization, which our country must definitely use," Jaba Tarimanashvili said in an interview.

Net Zero 2050 is a global goal that involves balancing the emission and absorption of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere to zero. This means that the gases that humanity emits (for example, as a result of industry, transport and energy) should be reduced as much as possible. In order to achieve the goal of halving emissions, it is necessary to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 45%.

The first long-term low-emission development strategy 2050 was adopted by the Georgian government on April 24, 2023. The goal of the strategy fully reflects the European Union's approach to climate policy and involves a sharp reduction in emissions.
