Gyumri-Kars Railway Line Restoration Project

Today, April 28, 2026, a meeting of the Turkish-Armenian Joint Working Group was held in Kars, dedicated to the restoration and commissioning of the Kars-Gyumri railway line.

The parties discussed the technical and logistical issues of the railway rehabilitation. This process is part of the agreement reached at the 6th meeting held in Yerevan in September 2025.

The railway line in question has been inactive for decades (the border has been closed since 1993). Its restoration is seen as one of the most tangible steps in restoring trust.

The US Embassy in Armenia called the meeting “historic progress.” The process was launched at a summit in Washington on August 8, 2025, where President Trump hosted Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan.
