Middle Corridor AI Mechanism in Azerbaijan

2026-03-02

Azerbaijan has been proposed to create a Middle Corridor Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Mechanism (MC-AICM) within the framework of the Middle Corridor, which should ensure the digital integration of logistics processes between the countries participating in the route. Report reports on this.

The choice of Azerbaijan as the proposed headquarters for the mechanism was due to the existence of a modern digital logistics zone in the port of Allat and the country's role as a coordinator of the Eurasian transport route.

In addition, Azerbaijan is distinguished by its strong integration with Central Asian states in the C5 format, developed digital infrastructure and strategic partnerships with the Chinese port of Xi'an, as well as leading European logistics networks.

The AI-mechanism of the Middle Corridor is required to perform the following functions:

Creating an AI-based predictive logistics platform for joint forecasting of ship arrivals, train movements, weather conditions in the Caspian Sea, and port congestion;

Implementing a unified digital customs system with AI-based risk assessment, advance data exchange, and automated cargo clearance along the entire corridor;

Developing “digital twins” of the main ports and terminals of Aliyat, Aktau, Kuryk, and Poti for capacity planning and scenario modeling;

Creating a cross-border data management system with unified standards for cybersecurity and digital cargo identification;

Creation of an AI innovation and training center in Baku to implement pilot projects (smart wagons, IoT sensors) and improve the skills of customs and logistics specialists.

For reference, in 2025, 392 block trains were sent along the East-West route, which is 37% more than in 2024. The container throughput capacity of the Baku port exceeded 100,000 TEU, which is a record figure. Currently, work is underway to increase the throughput capacity of the corridor and the annual cargo turnover of the Baku port to 260,000 TEU, as well as to improve border procedures.

In 2024, cargo turnover along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route increased by 62% and reached 4.5 million tons, and this year it should increase to 5.2 million tons. By 2027, the throughput of the Middle Corridor may reach 10 million tons per year, and the target forecast for 2030 is 11.4 million tons.
