Research of transit traffic of truck transport in Georgia

The "Transport Corridor Research Center" publishes the part of the research that refers to the traffic of trucks moving in transit on the highways of Georgia.

"How do we use the economic opportunity of the corridor passing through Georgia?"

As a result of the war between Russia and Ukraine in 2022, the number of transit trucks on the roads of Georgia increased by 1.5 times compared to 2021.

2021 - 332,100 units, 2022 - 496,300 units. What was considered an undeniably positive and promising trend in the first year, it should be noted that, contrary to the growth trend, the state increased the transit tax from 200 GEL to 350 GEL.

Naturally, in 2023 and 2024, it was important to maintain and increase the number of trucks moving in transit on the transit roads of Georgia, according to statistics, the dynamics of growth in the following years is practically not observed, 2023 - 514,300 units, 2024 - 513,600 units. Which is primarily related to the price increase.

The mentioned trend clearly indicates that there is no trend of truck traffic growth on the transit section of the Georgian Corridor.

As for the reasons, we offer a short excerpt of the problems presented to our organization by one of the transport companies - "an important problem is the queues at the customs points, the passive work of the customs officers, basically, the blocking of Rikoti and Kobi-Gudauri for an unknown period of time when moving on transit routes in snow or ice, for no reason Increased transit 350 GEL and 80 GEL park fees not accompanied by adequate services" (only a small list).

The dynamics of transiting truck traffic indicate that the traffic flow may return to the original corridors in the near future, which will harm the development of the corridor.
