South Caucasus is of strategic importance to NATO

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte presented the organization's 2025 report, which places great importance on the South Caucasus as a region of greatest importance for the Alliance's security.

Rutte welcomed the significant progress made in achieving peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, highlighting the initialing of the peace agreement in August, which he considered a decisive step towards normalizing relations and strengthening regional security.

The Secretary General assured that the Alliance is committed to deepening dialogue and cooperation with the two countries.

The report also highlights Azerbaijan’s active participation in the Partnership for Peace program and the exchange of experience with partner countries through the Defense Education Improvement Program.

As for Georgia, after the 2024 parliamentary elections, NATO reviewed its cooperation priorities. Although some programs have been transformed, cooperation in the military field has continued.

The report notes that the NATO Liaison Office in Tbilisi continues to work actively with all three partners in the region.
