On the map of the ancient world, the Mediterranean Sea was
not just a large expanse of water. It was a border that some peoples could not
cross, while others turned it into a route. The Phoenicians were among those
peoples who saw the sea as a route.
In the 1st millennium BC, the Phoenician cities of Tyre,
Sidon, Byblos and other coastal centers formed one of the most important
maritime systems in the eastern Mediterranean. Their power was not only in
trade. Their main advantage was their knowledge of the sea. The Phoenician
sailor did not own a modern nautical chart, GPS, radar or compass. But he had
other tools, they did not know the shape of the coast, the stars, the seasonal
wind regime, currents, the color of the sea, the nature of the waves and the
practical knowledge accumulated over generations.
Phoenician merchant ships were mainly propelled by oars and
sails. The main purpose of a merchant ship was to transport cargo, not speed.
The ship could carry timber, metal, wine, oil, glass, cloth, and other valuable
goods. The construction of a merchant ship was designed to carry relatively
large cargo, but a long stay on the open sea was still associated with serious
risks. From the point of view of naval engineering, the most important resource
of such a ship was not the ship itself, but its crew and their knowledge.
The Phoenician sailor determined the direction primarily by
the coast. This was the so-called coastal navigation - movement from one coast
to another, using known capes, islands, bays, and mountains as orientation
points.
At night, the stars were of particular importance. Observing
the stars of the northern sky to determine the direction of the north was an
important practical advantage. That is why in the ancient world, star knowledge
of the direction of north was of much more interest to sailors than just
astronomical interest. A sailor needed to know not only “where north is,” but
also where the ship should be at a particular moment. These are two completely
different things.
The Mediterranean Sea may seem like relatively calm waters
to a modern person, but its conditions were always dangerous for an ancient
ship. Strong winds, unexpected storms, poor visibility, and high waves posed
serious dangers to a small ship. Knowledge of seasonality was especially
important. The Phoenician sailor knew not only the specific wind, but also the
season of the wind.
This is a huge advantage in seafaring. If you know when the
wind from a particular direction is likely to strengthen, you can plan to sail,
stay on shore, or return to port. This is already a primitive form of maritime
risk management, but still.
The maritime activities of the Phoenicians gradually
extended beyond the eastern Mediterranean. Their trade network spread westward
and reached the Iberian Peninsula. Of particular importance was the Strait of
Gibraltar, known in the ancient world as the “Pillars of Hercules”. Here the
sailor was already encountering a different type of maritime environment.
The wave regime of the Atlantic Ocean, the nature of the
winds and the conditions of the open sea were different from those of the
Mediterranean. For a ship, this was not just another route - it was a change in
the marine environment. For the Phoenicians, such transitions were a test of
their maritime knowledge.
Tartessos, located in the southern part of the Iberian
Peninsula, became one of the important centers of Phoenician trade. Here, they
were especially interested in trade in metals. Silver and other resources were
of great economic importance for the markets of the eastern Mediterranean.
Therefore, the sea route was no longer just a “journey”. It has already become
part of the logistics system. This is where the logic of maritime trade begins,
which we see in modern ports and maritime logistics systems.
The ancient sailor had one big problem: the space for error
correction and very little knowledge. On a modern ship, a navigational error
can be quickly detected by GPS, radar, ECDIS or coastal VTS. The Phoenician
sailor did not have such an opportunity. If you lost the coast in fog, at night
or in a storm, you could lose not only the route, but also the ship itself.
Therefore, knowledge of the coast was actually a maritime safety system.
The Phoenician ship did not rely only on the knowledge of
the captain. There was a certain distribution of functions on the ship -
rowers, sailors, cargo handlers and managers. Safe management of the ship
depended on the coordination of the crew. The simultaneous operation of oars,
sail management, cargo distribution, and maintaining the ship's balance were,
in modern terms, part of one large onboard operating system.
Why was the Phoenician discovery important?
The Phoenicians did not discover a new continent. Their
historical significance lies in something else. They showed that the sea could
be not a barrier, but an international trade infrastructure. They created
maritime connections between different coasts. They spread trade knowledge,
navigational experience, technologies and cultural influence. From the point of
view of maritime history, this is much more important than one specific
geographical discovery.
The Phoenicians left us one of the first great lessons - those who know the sea do not just connect ports - they connect economic spaces. And this is where the history of great maritime discoveries begins. Even before European explorers dreamed of crossing the oceans, Phoenician sailors already knew the main thing - the sea is not an end. The sea is a path.
